Q1: I am already a member of IVAO, why is a separate registration needed to join the SAVAF?
A: It is our aim to establish a virtual South African Air Force, managed by the Special Operations Department, within the ZA Division. In order to manage the SAVAF properly separate registration is needed.
Q2: If I do not register will I be able to fly for the South African Virtual Air Force?
A: No, unfortunately not. The usage of the ZAV call sign is reserved for missions that are flown under the auspices of the SAVAF,
that is taking part in any of the activities as described on the Services page. Any member is however allowed to take part in any
international Special Operations event as mentioned in the HQ Spes Ops Rules and Regulations.
Q3: Why is the IVAO Flight Captain rating a prerequisite?
A: As you would know, military -, task force -, escort - and S&R operations require precision flying techniques. It is our believe that members who have attained the FC rating, have demonstrated their ability with regards to navigation and airmanship and would therefore be able to comply with the demands of the SAVAF. As explained on the main page, other competent pilots will be invited to join.
Q4: Why do I need a MSN email address?
A: If you select to join the Task Force a MSN account will be compulsory. This is so that SOCOMM can create a Telex Type communication with the pilot,
to aid in the transfer of instant communication.
Q5: If I do not wish to take part in the Task Force, do I still need to enter an e-mail address?
A: Yes, SAVAF Command (SOCOMM) will need an e-mail address to maintain communications with you.
Q6: If I select not to join the Task Force, in what activities will I be allowed to take part in?
A: The Task Force's main aim is to provide the services of a reaction force, in other words manning an alert center that can be deployed on very short notice. If you do not join the Task Force you will still be able to take part in all the other activities.
Q7: Will I need to be rated on all my choices of aircraft?
A: Yes, especially if the type of aircraft and flight modules are totally different, i.e., a fighter versus a cargo plane.
Q8: If I choose to join the Task Force, how long will my duty/standby periods be?
A: Your standby duty will be the available free time you have on that day.
Q9: Is it possible to progress to a higher position in the ranking structure?
A: Absolutely yes, on joining all members after receiving an aircraft rating will be commissioned as Lieutenants and will through the completion of assignments and hours be promoted to higher ranks. Click here for a full explanation of all criteria in terms of progressing through the SAVAF ranks.
Q10: Can I register as a SAVAF ATC?

A: Yes. You must be flying a military aircraft though, we promote the use of the SAVAF call sign when flying on the network as
SAVAF is seen as a prestigious membership and to promote the the Virtual Air Force.
Q13: Do I understand correctly, all SAVAF operations will be formal and therefore myself and a couple of mates cannot organize our own operational event.
A: Yes, the rules and regulations of IVAO forbid this kind of activity.
Q14: Am I allowed to make any suggestions on future operations and
events?
A: Yes, by all means contact the SOC or SOAC.
Q15: If I do not succeed in passing the rating the first time, what then?
